CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Carolina Beach Town Council held a workshop Tuesday for an update on the Sunny Day Flooding Project, which focuses on flooding events that happen outside of major storms.

The researchers from NC State held workshops to identify flood resilience strategies preferred by the community.

These strategies included a higher minimum bulkhead elevation, floodwater pumps, both of these combined. As well as a drainage canal or flood barrier.

Model runs were shown for each scenario, and the results were that each strategy has tradeoffs, and no single one completely solves the issue.

Mayor Lynn Barbee says this insight was helpful.

“It gets your brain thinking about what can we do and I know with my interactions with the folks on the North End, they understand the situation, they’re not looking for miracles, they’re just saying what can we do to improve it,” Barbee said.

No public comment was allowed at this workshop, but Barbee encouraged people to send them an email or go talk to them.
